Katherine Heigl seeks a wider big screen

In her 18-year career Katherine Heigl has done a great many things.

She played farce with Gerard Depardieu in "My Father the Hero" (1994), explored extraterrestrial soap opera in "Roswell" (1999-2002) and mastered medical matters in "Grey's Anatomy." That show's success led to her being cast in big-screen romantic comedies such as "Knocked Up" (2007), "27 Dresses" (2008) and "The Ugly Truth" (2009).

Never, however, had she been called upon to tackle the kind of action scenes demanded by her new film, the comedy "Killers."

"I look like a moron as an action person," Heigl said with a laugh during an interview at a Los Angeles hotel. "I was running and thinking, 'You don't do these kind of things! You save lives on a TV show. You give birth in a movie. You don't jump!'"

So she's not going to be the next Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton?

"Oh, believe me, I'm not an action star, which fits perfectly into this role," Heigl said, looking sexy in a silky, short, black-and-white dress that reveals about a mile of leg. "You can feel my pain in this movie when I'm shooting guns. But I have no choice. I'm just a girl who marries a guy who has this unfortunate past."

"Killers" casts the actress as a single woman who, while vacationing with her parents in the South of France, meets a quiet, handsome and romantic American (Ashton Kutcher). The two fall in love and soon marry, embarking on a life of ease. Her new husband, after all, is already retired from his job.

"The only problem is, he never really told me exactly what he did for a living," Heigl said.

It turns out that he's a retired superspy, a fact which comes up when they find themselves targeted by some baddies from his past.

"Suddenly we go from just a quiet suburban couple to two people on the lam with killers after them," she said. "I guess the message is that you can learn a lot about your mate when you're trying to survive with him."

The film is much different from Heigl's three recent romantic comedies, not to mention from the hospital drama "Grey's Anatomy," which she recently left. That's no accident, nor is it a coincidence that her next film, a drama called "Life as We Know It," is different from all of the above.

"I definitely wanted to go out and explore other characters," Heigl said. "It's nice to remove yourself and play a different movie character each time. You play yourself a bit on a series that's long-running. It's still me that shows up in a film role, but it's also always different.

"I know some of my film roles will be distant cousins of Izzie on 'Grey's Anatomy,'" she added. "I can always color my hair to change it up for people. That's how I'll fool everyone!"

At 31, Heigl says, she's eager to move beyond the light material that has so far been her bread and butter on the big screen.

"As much as I love the younger audience and a movie like '27 Dresses,'" she said, "I want to tell real stories to people my age. Life is full of issues and problems. Those are the movies I love the most, the ones that give you a view of the world and teach you how other people struggle through life.

"I like when a movie doesn't feel too cute, because life isn't always so cute."

This deeper perspective may be the result of parenthood: Last year Heigl and her husband, musician Josh Kelley, adopted a little girl from Korea. They named the girl, now 18 months old, Nancy Leigh Kelley. These days Heigl is frequently snapped by the paparazzi wheeling Naleigh, as she has been nicknamed, around Los Angeles.

A Hollywood film crew is in town checking out possible background shots for the first Stephanie Plum movie, though most of the story of Trenton’s most famous bounty hunter will be filmed in Pittsburgh.

The moviemakers planned to look over a Chambersburg restaurant and a few other city landmarks that could end up in the first film from author Janet Evanovich’s best-selling mystery series, which is set in Trenton.

Though all Evanovich’s books are set in Trenton, insiders said most of the movie will be filmed in Pittsburgh, which has some neighborhoods similar to Trenton’s and is said to be friendly to the film industry

Georgia credited in Katherine's movie Killers

Stay seated for the credits for the movie "Killers" next weekend and you'll see why Georgia Films officials love Hollywood these days.
The state's logo appears at the end of the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine Heigl comedy, shot last year in Atlanta.

"A lot of people actually do sit through the credits for things like extras, bloopers," said Stefanie Paupeck, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, which oversees the film division. "It's basically a ‘Made in Georgia' tag."

Katherine at a studio in Beverly Hills

A little rain didn’t stop Katherine Heigl from going about her day as she sported a thermos while entering a studio in Beverly Hills today (May 27).

Critics won't see Heigl-Kutcher comedy 'Killers' before opening day

You've probably seen the billboards, bus-stop ads and television spots for "Killers": They're everywhere, featuring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher juggling guns and bantering over super-secret identities.

But critics won't see the film before it appears in theatres, part of a growing strategy in Hollywood that relies more on social networking to promote new releases instead of riskier movie reviews.

Lionsgate, which is releasing the action comedy, has planned what's known as a "courtesy screening" for critics the morning of June 4, the day the film opens. It's a tactic studios normally use when there's a guaranteed niche audience, such as for horror movies or ones based on video games — the logic being that fans of the genre will show up, regardless of reviews.

But "Killers" is a mainstream romantic comedy with two A-list stars and a production budget of about $70 million — which is high for Lionsgate, known for the Tyler Perry movies, the "Saw" series and the Oscar-winning "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Robert Luketic, who previously worked with Heigl on last summer's critically savaged "The Ugly Truth," is the director.

This time, the studio said it would rather have viewers decide for themselves whether the movie is worthwhile, then write about it on Twitter or Facebook.

In "Killers," Heigl stars as a lovesick woman who thinks she's found the perfect man in Kutcher's character, only to discover his secret life as an international assassin once they've married and moved to suburbia.

"We want to capitalize on the revolution in social media by letting audiences and critics define this film concurrently," Lionsgate said in a statement late Wednesday. "In today's socially connected marketplace, we all have the ability to share feedback instantly around the world. In keeping with this spirit, Lionsgate and the filmmakers want to give the opportunity to moviegoing audiences and critics alike to see 'Killers' simultaneously, and share their thoughts in the medium of their choosing. We felt that this sense of immediacy could be a real asset in the marketing of 'Killers.'"

Paramount Pictures similarly refrained from showing critics its big-budget "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" last year, saying it wanted regular folks to define it instead. The studio intentionally aimed the blockbuster at the heartland, at cities and audiences outside the entertainment vortexes of New York and Los Angeles.

But Paramount also acknowledged the decision was driven by the disparity between the overwhelmingly negative reviews "Transformers: Rise of the Fallen" received earlier that summer and its domestic gross of over $400 million. "G.I. Joe" received just 28 per cent positive reviews on the Movie Review Intelligence website but it made over $150 million domestically.

There's usually no need to withhold movies from critics, regardless of the genre, said Brent Simon, president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

"The studios are operating under the false premise that critics somehow hate genre films, that they're not going to give them a fair shake, and empirically that's simply not proven out," said Simon, a critic for Screen Daily.

For example, Lionsgate didn't screen the Jason Statham action sequel "Crank: High Voltage" before its opening last year and it still received 62 per cent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

"I feel like they don't really have their finger on the pulse of the fan community," Simon said. "For people who are really into films, what the Internet has done — through message boards and a plethora of other sites that report on film — is it's opened up this world whereby they're able to see not only the goings-on of production but also of marketing. So when there are no reviews of a film the week of release, that message gets out there.

"It doesn't really matter what their interests or predilections are as far the types of films they're interested in, but people smell a stinker," he added. "They take that into account and it's a potential strike or demerit on a film."

Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel in Life As We know It

There are loads of cute moments in the trailer for the new rom-com Life As We Know It (watch it below), which stars Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel as enemies who end up raising their mutual friends’ baby together after an accident. You’ve got your grown-up humor, your slapstick, and enough awwwwwdorable baby antics to fill a full season of America’s Funniest Home Videos. And yet, the whole time, I only had one thought in my head…

Damn, those are two fine-looking people. Seriously, Heigl and Duhamel are both smoking-hot, jaw-dropping, sober 10s whose sole function in the world is to give the rest of us a collective inferiority complex. And that’s got me worried. How’s that baby going to cope when it ventures out into the world, only to find that the rest of the human population is made up of people at least 30 percent less hot than Auntie Kate and Uncle J? Maybe they should send it to a special superhot daycare with the Jolie-Pitts and Brady-Bundchens, where the kids can grow up safely in an aesthetically protected environment.

Katherine Heigl: Why My Husband Stopped Listening to Me

I'd be a terrible secret agent. I can't keep a secret and I'm not sneaky. Though I have to say I am very good at hiding. I can hide, and my husband's just terrible at finding me. I do like to jump out from behind doors and scare him," Heigl says.

Katherine Heigl surprised Grey's Anatomy fans with a sudden departure from the hit series, but she's keeping busy on the big screen. In Killers, Heigl takes on her first action role opposite Ashton Kutcher. After she discovers his secret life as a government assassin, she ends up joining him to take out some bad guys from his past.

In real-life, however, Heigl is much too upfront to go undercover.
There are some things that if you say them out loud it will hurt the other person's feelings," Katherine says. "I tend to say them anyway because I think it's better to be honest. I gave Josh [husband Josh Kelley] a really hard time recently because he got this new haircut for a photo on the country album he's releasing. I really didn't like it, even though everybody else loved it. I was like, 'You don't look like you. You're really sexy, you're a manly man and this is kind of a metrosexual look.' Finally, he just stopped listening to me."

Ashton was honest with her.
"He was really mad at me because I wouldn't do my own stunts. He was only partly joking when he said that I probably even think running is a stunt. Actually, I do, because it's dangerous. I have bad feet and I have weak ankles. If you have to do it over and over again, you can hurt yourself. Anyway, Ashton was always just rolling his eyes at me."
At least she's feeling confident as a mom.
"It could all turn to crap when my daughter turns 13 or something. But, I think as of right now, we are so into it and confident as parents like, 'We're in charge.' We're the cliche, typical couple who's talking about poopie diapers and stuff. We're always communicating about those more than we probably talk about anything else. I know we'll eventually chill out."
What she can't get right.
"I keep kind of making certain mistakes in public appearances over and over again. I was on Letterman the other night, and I always choose a dress that's impossible to sit in. It looks great standing, but then you sit and you are like, 'Oh, my God. All my cellulite is showing.' So you have to sit like a statue. I keep forgetting the lesson I learned: just wear pants."

Katherine Heigl's adoption story about how to do it right

As Sandra Bullock’s four year ordeal to successfully adopt a baby becomes an increasingly bigger story in the supermarket tabloids, Katherine Heigl’s adoption story moves ever more rapidly to the sidelines. While Heigl did not win an Oscar and then discover her husband was cheating on her, she does have an interesting story to tell.

Heigl, the former Grey’s Anatomy actor who co-stars with Ashton Kutcher in the upcoming Killers decided to adopt a child even though she and her husband, Josh Kelley, had not been told they could not conceive one by themselves. She had grown up with an older sister who had been adopted from South Korea and decided to go the same route. They had Naleigh, a special needs child, in their care in September of 2009, less than a year after they had begun the adoption process. She says, in an Los Aangeles hotel room, that she felt there were so many needy children it felt more comfortable to her to take one in than have one of her own. And she says that if she learned anything during the process, it was that most people are not prepared to be parents.

“It feels kind of selfish to not adopt when you know that there are so many needy children but it [the adoption process] is lengthy and complicated and you had better hope there is nothing in your background that they will find because they do a million background checks, which they should do, and there is fingerprinting and meetings and they come to your home and make you fill out a form. I also think that anyone who wants to have a child should fill out this form because it forces you to answer questions you probably wouldn’t have thought about unless it was put in front of you. You assume that you and your partner are on the same page about most things. But it asks questions like ‘do you plan to raise them religiously? What kind of disciplinarian do you plan to be? Is your family going to be involved in their lives? What kind of education do you plan to give them?’ So you have to think about how you feel as a unit about these things.”

Asked if she is concerned that the parents will leave South Korea and come to the United States to find their child, she says that, for better or worse, it’s unlikely to happen. “I don’t think so. The situation in Korea is that if you are an unwed mother it is very hard for you to keep your child and essentially if they don’t have a father who will claim the child you don’t have a birth certificate. If you don’t have that then you are not accepted into society. It [giving a child up for adoption] is one of the toughest choices anyone would have to make in their lives but it is really the only choice they can make if they want this child to have a shot. It’s very unfortunate but it’s cultural.”

Lauren Glazier talking about Killers

You have great projects coming up. How was your experience working on the film ''Killers'' with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher?

Yeah I've been blessed to be working, and with some wonderful actors! For Killers, I actually worked with Tom Selleck, Katherine Heigl and Catherine O'Hara, which was wonderful. I only met Aston in the Make-up trailer. Working with them was great, I mean talk about experience. It was a very relaxed vibe. The director Robert Luketic, was great, having fun with everyone. I can say only wonderful things about them all. My character was fun, light and I had a French accent so we had some laughs. Of Course Tom Selleck was just the sweetest guy, and being Canadian Catherine O'Hara is somewhat of a legend up there, I grew up watching her so it was great to meet her and work with her. Katerine Heigl was also really lovely and welcoming.

Katherine Heigl 'Missing the Party'

Since she left "Grey's Anatomy," Katherine Heigl tells "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli that it's hard for her to watch the show.

"I feel really outta the loop. There was a time when I knew the storylines before they aired and there was a time when I was present in these scenes or these storylines -- and Alex moving on is very difficult for me," said Heigl.

The actress also tells Jerry that she's a little jealous and feels like she's "missing the party." "I kinda had to just take a step back... The beauty is I can always buy the season on iTunes, when I feel there's enough distance," Katherine said while laughing.

Katherine recently adopted a baby girl from Korea with musician husband Josh Kelley, and was overcome with emotion remembering the moment she found out she was about to become a mom.

"They told us that it was a little girl and she was born the day before me, and I was like, 'Oh my God,' this is crazy," she said. "Then they told us that she had a condition and wanted us to be sure we were comfortable taking a child that had this medical condition and I just went, are you kidding?"

Her daughter Naleigh's condition was a heart defect that required open heart surgery. Baby Naleigh is doing well and is "100%," says Heigl.

Killers Interview

you can listen to the audio here and now the whole interview to read:

Question: What was the appeal for each of you to do this film?

Ashton Kutcher: My character in the film is a guy who starts out in this extraordinary place with this extraordinary profession. When he meets the right person, he decides that he just wants a normal life, and it’s a life that he doesn’t necessarily get to have. For me, I found that I was connected to that. Also, when I read the script, I had been looking for a movie like this, that was a two-hander and that was a fun, entertaining action-comedy. I thought I was going to find it in a buddy cop movie with two guys. And then, when I read this script, I realized that this kind of movie hadn’t been made in awhile and I felt like we could have a really good time doing it and make a really entertaining film.

Katherine Heigl: I’ve obviously been doing a few romantic comedies, and what I loved about this particular romantic comedy was that it had the added element of action, so it was a slightly different take on the formula. Although I love the formula and I will continue, hopefully until I’m too old to do them, to do romantic comedies, this just had an energy and this thing that made it unique. I loved being the broad character to Ashton’s straight guy. It was really fun to not be the straight guy, for a change, and Ashton made it really fun and easy to do that. When I saw the movie, I was very entertained, and that’s hard to do when you’re in it ‘cause that takes you out of it. With this movie, I just had such a good time watching it and thought, “That’s exactly what we were going for. I love it!”

Everybody in this movie has secrets. Do you think it’s a good idea to sometimes keep secrets in a relationship, or should you never do that?

Kutcher: I firmly believe that it’s a good idea to keep secrets. I think it depends on who the secret is benefitting. If, at the end of the day, you’re the person that’s benefitting from the secret, or you’re hiding something, and you’re the one who has something at stake, then you should probably tell it. If the secret is benefitting the other person, maybe you should keep it.

Heigl: That’s probably far more profound than anything I could say. Unfortunately, I have a very difficult time keeping secrets, which is evident in any interview with me you ever read. So, I don’t really have any, and I don’t think my husband does. I think that it’s okay. I think that everybody has a right to their own thoughts, their own feelings and their own private moments, if they want them. If my husband had a second wife in Spain, that would probably be too big a secret to keep. But, if he’s using Rogaine, that’s okay, he doesn’t have to tell me.

Ashton, did you actually try to grow your own Tom Selleck mustache for the film?

Kutcher: I have been trying to grow that mustache since I could grow facial hair. I believe that Tom produces more testosterone in his little finger than I produce in my entire body. My face doesn’t do that. I’m so enamored by Tom’s facial hair that I would say Tom’s mustache is akin to Chuck Norris’ beard. That’s a great thing. I can’t grow a mustache. It’s pretty sad, if I attempt to.

Heigl: I can!

How do you know that you’ve met the right person?

Heigl: It starts with a tingle in your toes.

Kutcher: I don’t know. I really think that you have to find a partner that compliments you and is somebody that pushes you and is better at some things than you are, so they can push you to improve yourself as a person. That’s my take.

Heigl: I think the exact opposite. I think it’s better to find somebody who’s worse at everything than you. It just makes you constantly feel so good about yourself. And then, you can constantly talk about how good you are at everything, and how terrible they are at everything. No. I agree, for sure, with Ashton. My husband is better at most everything that I am. What I loved about this film, in particular, was that, with Jen and Spencer, Spencer is a sophisticated guy who has seen the world and done all these things that are beyond her understanding or reality, and she’s just dorky. She doesn’t know she’s dorky, but she just is. She’s living in her own skin. She has a moment where she tries to be sophisticated to match this amazing man that she’s met, and then she gives it up pretty quickly, and that’s, ultimately, what he loves about her. That is certainly my relationship. What makes it so spectacularly wonderful is that my husband loves all the things that everyone else would find ridiculous, silly or dorky. That’s when you know you’ve found the right person.

Katherine, are there any of the great comic leading ladies that you look at for inspiration?

Heigl: Yeah. There’s so many beautifully comedic and wonderful actress, like Shirley MacLaine. My friend, T.R. Knight, was so jealous that I got to work with Catherine O’Hara, Tom Selleck and Rob Riggle, the comedic genius.

Ashton, as a producer, did you bring the film in on time and on budget?

Kutcher: No. As a producer, I’m extremely satisfied with the film. We set out to make a movie that was a $100 million movie for $70 million. That’s always tricky because you don’t have that luxury of the extra day, or the back-up when something goes wrong. We got to Nice, France and it was supposed to be sunny and beautiful, but it was freezing and windy, and we were on a yacht that was pitching. And then, we got to Atlanta and, in the middle of the night, one of our generators got struck by lightning, so it just shut us down. And it rained and rained and rained. We got fogged out one night. We were shooting outdoors, doing the scene where the car is crashing through the fences, and we got fogged out. Every single time one of those things happened, we just had to completely re-jigger what we were doing, in order to make the movie, make it on time and make it on budget. We got very, very close. I think we were a couple days over and a couple dollars over, but we kept it pretty well close.

Ashton, is an older wife better than a younger wife?

Ashton: At the end of the day, I think it’s about the right wife. I think it’s really about finding somebody who is the right one. Usually, it’s going to be something illogical, it won’t make sense and you’ll have to take a risk to find it. My teacher says that everything that you want in the world is one step away, you just have to figure out which direction to step in. In this movie, when my character makes the choice to leave his business and what it is that he’s doing for this woman, it’s really the representation of sacrifice. If you really want to make a relationship work, at some point in time, you’re going to have to make some sacrifices and do some things that are a little bit uncomfortable. So, to me, that’s an anchor that I understand.

Katherine, what are you most grateful for, in your career and in your life?

Heigl: In my career, I’m very grateful for the opportunities. It’s a crazy feeling, and I feel very fortunate. I can’t stop trying to take them all. It’s awesome. In my life, I’m very, very grateful for my family and for my friends. Over the past couple of years, I’ve found nothing more grounding, safe and constant than my friends and family, and I’m very grateful to be a mom. It’s changed my whole perspective, in a very good way. There’s lots to be grateful for.

Ashton, it seems like you can do no wrong, when it comes to finding the right projects, whether it’s films you’re in, TV shows you’re producing, camera commercials or your Twitter account. Where does the most pressure come from, for you?

Kutcher: I fail frequently, I just try to keep it quiet. I don’t know. I guess it’s not really a pressure. I don’t feel like anything is pushing me. I feel like I’m just being pulled to things. I like to win. I think that that’s one element. I also really just think about what audiences and people would want. One of the things about being on Twitter, for me, is mostly about just being on the pulse of what people are interested in, what people are doing and what people are looking for. I look at entertainment projects and storytelling and I really try to think about what people want. I try to think about that guy or girl who’s getting off of work on a Friday night, after a long week of work. What do they want to go do? What do they want to go see? When it came to this movie, in particular, it rides on this fine line of reality and entertainment. I don’t know how many people die in the movie, but you never get sucked into this sadness of death. You’re still laughing while people are dying, all over the place. They’re getting shot and killed, but we ride that tonal line of entertainment. There are no cops that show up, so there is this massive break in reality, but once you get on the ride, you just get to take a ride. For me, this film was about that guy or girl, on a Friday night, who gets off of work and just wants to go take a ride, have some fun, be entertained and let loose. If you see a vessel and it’s empty, and you can figure out a way to fill it, you go for it. That’s what this movie is about for me, and that’s what entertainment is about.

Ashton, what would people be surprised to know about you?

Kutcher: I cease to shock myself anymore. People are most shocked and most in disbelief that I go to the office every day. I have a job. When I’m not acting on a movie, I go to work, first thing in the morning. I’m at work at 8 o’clock in the morning, and I get home from work at 7 o’clock at night. I treat my job like a job, and I work at it. I think people would probably be most surprised, if I ever calculated up the number of hours I work on an average week and published that. If it was ever documented, I think people would be shocked to find out.

Ashton, what was it like to do the fighting and the stunts in this film?

Kutcher: I do have a stunt person. I’m not as awesome as Tom Cruise. I don’t jump through glass. I didn’t participate in that. My stunt guy went to the hospital twice, for jumping through glass. I did jump off a boat and I did most of the fight stuff. I bought one of those exercise DVDs off the TV. I put it in and watched it, and got in shape. I did some fight training. I learned Krav Maga, Muay Thai and Kali, which is a Filipino knife fighting. And then, I realized that I should have learned how to movie fight ‘cause on the first fight scene, I knocked out a stunt guy. That was a bad ordeal. We were doing that scene on the boat, and we were on a yacht in the wind. He threw a punch and I blocked it, and then punched him and knocked him out. I felt really bad about that. And then, I kicked Rob [Riggle] in the face. I hurt a lot of people. I should have just let the stunt guy do everything, to be honest, and stuck to just making jokes.

Katherine Heigl: I Left 'Grey's Anatomy' to Be a Full-Time Mom

While promoting her new action-comedy 'Killers,' co-starring Ashton Kutcher and Tom Selleck and in theaters June 4, Katherine Heigl admitted to ET's Samantha Harris that she regrets leaving "Grey's Anatomy" every day, but said she's grateful that she chose to raise her baby daughter Naleigh full-time instead.

"It was a really hard choice to make and you never quite know, 'Was it the right choice or the wrong choice?'" Katherine said of leaving "Greys." "But the only thing that gives me solace is knowing that if I hadn't [left], I wouldn't have had these months with Naleigh that have just sort of solidified our relationship."

"I needed that to happen," she continued. "I really needed her to get that I'm her mom. And I needed to show her that, I couldn't just tell her."

Katherine, who adopted Naleigh from Korea last September with her husband Josh Kelley, told Samantha she hasn't seen the "Grey"'s season finale yet, but she plans to catch it soon on i-Tunes -- and she confessed that she can't help but wonder how her character Izzie's tale would have played out.

"As much as I miss my friends [on the show] and wonder what Izzy's storyline would have been in the season finale, I am so, so grateful that I chose to give [Naleigh] this time. She and I needed it."

"She's just getting more and more fun every day, like the walking, the talking and mimicking," added the proud mom. "She's super-goofy and has a great sense of humor which is just awesome for us, because we love to laugh.

"It's been really amazing to have that time with her, for sure, and to be just Mom, and be involved and be in charge," Katherine said. "And so now it's hard to go back to work, but there is a big part of me that's anxious to go back to work."

Katherine Heigl Opens Up About Baby Daughter's Heart Surgery

While promoting her new action-comedy 'Killers,' co-starring Ashton Kutcher and Tom Selleck and in theaters June 4, Katherine Heigl opened up to "The Insider"'s Chris Jacobs about the harrowing experience of being continents apart from her daughter while baby Naleigh recovered from heart surgery.

Naleigh, who Katherine and hubby Josh Kelley welcomed from Korea last September, underwent the surgery in her native country before the couple began the process of adopting her. Once she'd been assigned to them, however, waiting to bring Naleigh home was the hardest part, Katherine said.

"I was dying because I just wanted to know. I wanted to know: How is she being cared for? And how is this going?" the former "Grey's Anatomy" star told Chris.

"If you're really lucky they'll send a picture every once in a while… And you're going, 'I can't tell if she's happy or well or cared for,' but she really, really was. She was in a wonderful foster family. Her foster mother sat with her every night in the hospital all night during that surgery," Katherine said with an emotional exhale.

She added that meeting her baby daughter for the first time was a profoundly moving experience.

"It was surreal. I just sort of grabbed her out of the social worker's arms… and held her against me, and was just like, 'Okay, now what?'" she laughed.

"For days and days we just held her all the time… and she would lay on us like a little pea pod and watch. Just watch everything, and I'm sure she was terrified," Katherine recalled. "At that point, all we wanted to do was tell her she's loved: 'You're safe and you're loved.'… To see her now -- boy, does she know she's safe and loved!"

Katherine Heigl Gets Real

Now that she's a married mom of an adopted daughter, the outspoken Katherine Heigl is learning to think before she speaks.

Katherine Heigl is at home in Los Angeles's Los Feliz neighborhood, pulling cheese after cheese out of her fully stocked fridge.

"This is for us," she says, beaming as she loads crackers onto a plate. Then she kisses her 18-month-old adopted Korean daughter, Naleigh (a combination of Nancy, for Katherine's mother and longtime manager, and Leigh, the middle name of her adopted sister, also Korean). "Mommy has to do an interview," Katherine tells her. "And eat some cheese."

She heads to an outdoor deck, leaving Naleigh to watch The Backyardigans with her husband, singer Josh Kelley, and Mojo, one of their six dogs. For the moment, the rest of the pack is at the park, so the house is relatively quiet. When Katherine found Mojo on the set of 27 Dresses, Josh told her no more dogs. "I started crying," says Katherine, who everyone calls Katie. "I said, 'Where's your heart? Where's your soul? I'm supposed to be marrying you, and you don't know who I am by now,' and he's like, 'Fine, just take the dog. Jesus.'"

But lately life has been focused more on Naleigh, whom she and Josh adopted last September, at nine months. Though Naleigh has been described in the press as special-needs, she was actually born with a congenital heart problem that was fixed via open-heart surgery before she left Korea. "Her heart is 100 percent fine now. She has a scar, so she won't be wearing bikinis, which is fine by us," Katherine explains, unembarrassed by her overprotectiveness. "A lot of children don't find forever homes because they're on that special-needs list, even if it's because of something as simple as her mother smoked cigarettes for a month, not knowing she was pregnant. That's not so huge that you couldn't handle it."

When Naleigh arrived, Katherine, 31, was in Atlanta working on Life as We Know It, to be released later this year. In a bizarre life-imitating-art scenario, the movie happens to be about a woman who unexpectedly takes custody of a baby.

"It was crazy, because as my character was learning how to take care of a one-year-old, I was too," says Katherine, dressed in a cardigan and jeans. Her hair is pulled back, and a light dusting of makeup covers up any mommy-induced exhaustion. "But as I was working with these gorgeous little triplets who play my child, I was feeling bad that I was spending more time with them than with my own kid. And that broke my heart."

In some ways, the experience on Life as We Know It precipitated a three-month-long respite (and delayed family leave from Grey's Anatomy) at her new vacation home in Utah--the longest time, in fact, that she'd spent with Josh since the two started dating five years ago. (They married in Park City in 2007; Katherine was raised Mormon.) "There were a good few weeks when I almost smothered him with his pillow," she says. But that's marriage, she adds: "two people with totally different lives and totally different experiences just trying to fit."

But more significantly, the three months with Naleigh convinced Katherine it was time to move on from Izzie Stevens, the neurotic resident she played for six seasons on Grey's. The role won her an Emmy in 2007, but as the press has documented well, it's been rocky.

Though some use the evidence to suggest she's a diva, one can argue that Katherine wouldn't be the star she is today without her ballsy moves and vocal, opinionated point of view. She called her first hit, Knocked Up, "a little sexist," stood up for gay best friend T.R. Knight at the Golden Globes, and bowed out of the Emmy race in 2008 because "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination." Without that candor, she'd be just another milquetoast starlet.

"I spent so many years just saying what I felt without thinking about the ramifications, without understanding that I have this opinion but not everyone might share that opinion and now they don't like me because of it. That was really awkward. I hate it when people say this, but I'm a people pleaser," she explains. "I was really raised with the idea that it's important to be honest and to share your experiences, both disappointing and exhilarating. But sometimes I think the American public just wants to see my life as good fortune. They don't want to know about the day-to-day. It ruins the fantasy. It's lame to say that I'm a normal girl, but I think I am."

And like any normal girl, Katherine's learning that baby can get in the way of a romantic evening with her hubby, like when Naleigh threw up on her lingerie. "If parent time interferes with sexy time, that's that," she says, laughing.

She also finds it a challenge to keep up with the fashions of fellow celebrities' daughters, like Suri Cruise or Zahara Jolie-Pitt. "Dude, I try, but I'm not nailing the baby fashion. It's intimidating. I get beautiful outfits from Gap and baby Juicy, but I'm not layering it or putting her in Prada flats. It's really stressing me out." She also doesn't want her daughter to grow up to be a spoiled rich kid. "I want her privilege to afford her to seek many different things that might fulfill her. I don't want her to have a Beemer on her 16th birthday or spend the summer at a beach house with friends. Nope. You want a beach house, you pay for it."

Now that Grey's Anatomy is no longer keeping her in Hollywood, a place she describes as "high school on steroids," she and Kelley are considering a move to Nashville so he can be closer to his country-music career. Perhaps Naleigh will become "a Korean country-music star. That'd be sick," she laughs. "I know she's going to get pushed into music." But she's not sure if her mother, with whom she lunches on a regular basis, will follow, which gives Katherine pause.

"The relationship I have with my mother is rare, and I know for some people it looks like I'm a real mama's girl," she says. "I never cut the apron strings, but that's one thing I will never deny. It has saved me."

But Katherine recognizes that despite the positives in her life--leaving a hit show on the upswing, a burgeoning film career (the action comedy Killers, opposite Ashton Kutcher, who "looks so hot with his shirt off," opens in June), starting a family--she still has work to do.

"Now it's time to reevaluate and grow up. I hope by my mid-30s, I get to the point where I don't doubt myself," Katherine explains. "I'm going to make mistakes and say stupid things, but I won't have to sit in a room in the dark and wonder, 'Am I a bad person?' It will be 'Okay, Katie, enough with the drama.'"

Killers mentioning

Analysts are also keeping a close eye on “Killers,” an action comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher that arrives from Lionsgate on June 4. Although Ms. Heigl has a powerful box office track record, this film is one of the most expensive for this boutique studio with a budget of about $70 million and faces competition a few weeks later from “Knight and Day,” another action comedy but with bigger stars (Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise).

Tom Selleck talking about Killers

The movie Killers with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher is being released June 4—do you get to show your funny side?
Yes, I get to play Katherine Heigl’s father, but I’m not just playing a dad. It’s quite interesting and complex and there are a lot of twists and turns. It’s a romantic/action/adventure film. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Do you have a big role?
It is, I think. They put me in the trailer. [Laughs] We shot for 10 days in the south of France—that was kind of neat. And it was fun working with Ashton and Katherine.

So, as far as you’re concerned, reports of Heigl being a diva and having a bad attitude aren’t fair?
Who? What? I find her charming and incredibly good. What we say in the business is she’s got chops. She’s really a good actress. Everybody gets his or her turn in the box with the press—I would take it with a grain of salt. I had nothing but fun with her. She was nothing but professional.

Katherine Heigl Puts a Bounty on Animal Abusers

Since our furry friends are voiceless, it's always a plus when a celebrity steps up to speak on their behalf. And Katherine Heigl is doing just that. Yesterday, the actress announced that her charity, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, will offer rewards in animal abuse cases investigated by Last Chance for Animals.

"Getting the word out to a big audience can help us to catch an abuser quickly," Last Chance for Animals campaign director Kim Sill tells PEOPLEPets.com. "With Katherine's high profile, and true love for animals, it will really make a difference in finding perpetrators and punishing them to the fullest extent of the law."

Sill says the partnership started to form about a year ago, when Heigl's mom Nancy called to talk about stories of animal abuse she'd seen in the news. "She came upon the story of Little Trooper, a dog who'd been burned by some teenagers and left in an alley," Sill explains. Together, LCA and the Heigls got involved with police and posted flyers offering rewards. But the people behind the attack were never found. However, that wasn't about to stop the two organizations from attempting to track down other abusers. "Our goal is to someday never have these phone calls about such stories," Sill says.

From this point forward, LCA and the Heigls will team up when a high-profile animal abuse case surfaces. They'll organize press conferences, distribute educational materials and offer those all-important rewards. "We'll show America that there's a proper way to treat animals," Sill says. "And if you don't, we'll come after you."

Katherine Heigl: Motherhood Changes Emotions

Katherine Heigl leaves daughter Naleigh (pronounced Nay-leigh) home for the first time in six months when she attends the 13th Annual ASPCA’s Bergh Ball held at The Plaza in NYC.

The adopted Korean girl, 17 months, is getting daddy-and-me time with singer-songwriter dad Josh Kelley, who is the brother of Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley.

“He’s spectacular,” the actress, 31, tells me of the man she married in 2007. “I couldn’t have even imagined a better father for her. She’s the luckiest little kid. We call him Disneyland Dad because as soon as he comes in, it’s fun and happiness and rides around the room on his shoulders. He’s attentive and involved. I never for a minute would question leaving her.”

She continues, “This is the first time I’ve actually left her in six months, so it’s a little weird for me, but I knew she was in really good hands because Josh is fantastic with diapers, food, nap-time, playtime. He’s got it all.”

What are her latest milestones?

“Right now, last weekend, she started getting the courage to walk more on her own. She would walk, and she held our hands, and sometimes she’d take a few Frankenstein steps, but now literally something switched in her brain, and she was like ‘I’m going to give this a go. We leave her to hang out, and suddenly you see her, and she’s walking. It was astounding!”

And, she’s talking. Her first word was “hi.”

“And then she would go ‘oh yeah’ [throws voice] all the time. She’d be playing with her toys and go ‘oh yeah’ [throws voice] in that inflection.”

For the owner of six dogs, who is trying to convince hubby Josh to add another pup to their household, saving the animals is her passion. She admits she can’t sleep at night when she thinks about how shelters can’t save all the precious pups who live there.

Little Naleigh is thrilled with all of her furry friends.

“We give her crackers to eat, and she’ll be munching on her crackers, and looking at the dogs because they’re standing there staring at her – waiting, waiting, waiting,” she says. “And then she’ll let them have a bite of her cracker, take it back and walk away. They follow her everywhere.”

Now that she’s become a mom, Katherine feels more in tune with her emotions.

“Watching any film or television that deals with a mother and child story is so gut-wrenching in a way I could have never predicted,” she tells me. “You have this empathy suddenly, this compassion for a mother going through anything difficult or complicated with a child because suddenly I understand that unbelievable drive and instinct to protect. Protect, make them happy, shelter them, give them everything they need in life to be happy. That was a weird feeling. I was like ‘that’s a lot of pressure.’”

One show Katherine can’t get enough of is CW’s Life Unexpected.

“I love the story about these parents who gave a child up for adoption and she came back into their lives 16 years later,” Katherine says. “I think about what it cost Naleigh’s parents to let her go, and that it was the best thing they could do for her, but how hard that must be emotionally, and then I sit and watch this show every week, and I’m like ‘this is from the birth mother’s perspective.’ It’s amazingly well-done. I love it.”
