Stephanie Plum (Katherine Heigl) can't catch a break. At 30, she finds herself newly-divorced, recently laid-off and living with her hamster in Trenton, NJ. Broke and desperate, she lands a job working for her slimy cousin and his bail bond business. In need of fast cash she latches on to his biggest case - a local cop wanted for murder who just happens to be the guy that broke her heart in high school. Stephanie gets resourceful and tough, as she is swept up in a suspenseful world of murder, deceit, with a bit of romance.

Searching locations for One For The Money

With traffic cones lining the lanes and police cars flashing their lights in the vicinity of the Kittanning Citizens Bridge last Friday afternoon, there were many rumors spreading across town. Are they repainting the lines on the bridge? Did some down-on-their-luck resident jump over its railings? Was there a major vehicle collision? The answer: none of the above. Locations Manager Shawn Boyachek and a crew were in town to analyze the Kittanning Citizens Bridge this past Friday for its possible appearance in the upcoming film “One for the Money” starring Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy, 27 Dresses, Knocked Up).

The movie is based on a popular book series, consisting of 16 books so far, written by Janet Evanovich.

Heigl is set to play the leading role as main character Stephanie Plum. In the book series, Plum is an unemployed lingerie buyer who, because she is almost completely out of money, convinces her cousin Vinny to give her a job as a bounty hunter for his bail bond business even though she has no experience whatsoever. Her first job offers a reward of $10,000. However, the target that she is required to track down is an old romantic acquaintance of hers named Joe Morelli. Morelli is suspected of murder and is on the run.

The scene that may be shot on Kittanning’s bridge occurs when Heigl, playing Plum, is in her car and stops to speak with someone. While checking out the bridge, Boyachek seemed very positive about the scene’s chances of being shot in Kittanning. “Everything looks pretty good,” he said. “I’m very confident that it will work well.”

Boyacheck has experience working in the downtown Kittanning environment since he worked on the pilot of an FX series called “Justified” Since he worked on the pilot for an FX series called “Justified” here last year Boyacheck has become familiar with the area.

In order to survey the bridge, the left-hand turning lane coming into downtown Kittanning was blocked-off, orange traffic cones were put up, and Kittanning Police were directing traffic at the intersection of Water Street and Market Street.

Boyacheck said that the production crew was working with PennDOT District 10 in order to make room for the project.

“They were looking at the film shots to see what they were going to use for the film,” said Acting Community Relations Coordinator for PennDOT District 10 Harold Swan. “Our role is somewhat limited, but it’s very much essential. Today, for example, they worked out an agreement with the local municipality in order to permit the work to be done there. So, they made-up a works and traffic control plan with the local municipality who ran it by us. They do a signed document, they run it through our traffic department here, and get it approved. So, that gave them the ability to do what they needed to do today.”

Swan and Boyacheck both said that shooting probably won’t occur until sometime in September.

“ More importantly though, for the September time frame, when they go to do the actual shoot, we do an agreement with them which basically says that we’re going to sit down with them ahead of time and talk about how we’re going to do the works and traffic control, how we’re going to manage a detour, if necessary, and how we’re going to manage all of the other details that are involved in closing that bridge down in order for them to do filming in a safe and efficient manner including how we’re going to alert motorists, and how we’re going to take care of advanced signing. So, all of the things that we would do with a typical construction project we would do with a type of project like that. We’re hand-in hand; they have all of the costs, but we are there to provide advice, guidance, and support to make sure it’s done according to our standards.”

Justin missing Katherine all the time

Katherine Heigl may be gone from Grey's Anatomy, but she's certainly not forgotten.

"I miss her all the time," Justin Chambers told me at the Maui Film Festival. "She's such a great actor. She's so fun to work off of. I miss working with her."

But that doesn't mean, we've heard the last of their onscreen romance…

As fans of the show know, Alex (Chambers) called out for Izzie (Heigl) when he was shot in the abdomen during the season finale.

"I think that's a couple on television that people will always remember," Chambers said. "There's not much Alex without her. I think he'll be mourning Izzie for the next two seasons."

Chambers also defended Heigl against her critics. "She admits that she has a mouth on her, but she's got a heart much bigger than her mouth," he said. "It's so unfair because I think people have taken her the wrong way. She's actually a good person. She's very funny and very kind."

Chambers was in Maui for the premiere of The Happiest Man Alive, a short in which he stars as a not-so-happy office worker. He signed onto the project after meeting director Andrew Goodman at the film fest last year. "Andrew was talking about how he wanted to make a short and I said, 'Dude, I'll make a short with you,'" Chambers said. "And we shook hands and we made it."

Awkward First Dates

Katherine Heigl reckons first dates can be nothing but tense.

The US actress stars in Killers as nerdy girl Jen, who goes on a difficult first date with Ashton Kutcher's character Spencer.

"Everyone's had those dates, which are just awkward - first dates are awkward," she said.

"You're ordering and you're kind of paranoid about what you're ordering as you don't want to order too much, then it's the issue of who's paying or are you splitting? Should I drink or is that going to make me look like an alcoholic?" she added.

In another scene the evening ends with Spencer cutting Jen out of a crippingly tight dress.

"God it's hard to pull off a tight white dress but thankfully Robert (Luketic, director) always shoots me very kindly. We should have shown her in knees to chin Spanx but I'm not that brave," Katherine said.

New mum Katherine Heigl says she couldn't be happier after the Knocked Up star and her country musician husband Josh Kelley adopted South Korean daughter Naleigh in September last year.

And just when she heard the adoption of the tot - now 19-months-old - had gone through, the Grey's Anatomy actress landed the lead in Killers, released today, alongside Ashton Kutcher. So, Katherine, 31, found herself starring in a major movie while learning to be a mum.

Here, she tells The Ticket about her new film - in which she marries a former professional assassin whose past comes back to haunt them - and her adopted daughter.

How was working with Ashton Kutcher on Killers?

It was fun, but he was really mad at me that I wouldn't do my own stunts. He jokes - or probably only partly jokes - that I even think running is a stunt. And I do! [Laughs]

It's dangerous. I have bad feet and weak ankles. If you have to do it over and over again for all the different angles and takes, you can hurt yourself. So I had to wrap my ankles and stuff, but he was always just rolling his eyes at me.

Do you agree with the idea in the movie that you can have secrets within a marriage?

Well, I think it's better to be honest. I gave Josh a really hard time recently because he had this haircut that I really didn't like, although everyone else did.

I told him, "It's not you. You're really sexy, you're a manly man and this is sort of a metro haircut and I don't like it."

He just wouldn't listen to me and I think it was changing how I like looked at him - like I stopped kind of feeling he was that sexy. So he eventually agreed to have it changed and then I was all over him. I was like, "My god, you are so hot!"

Why did you decide to adopt?

I grew up with adoption. My [adopted] sister is Korean, so it was just kind of natural and obvious. We chose a Korean baby because of my sister and to this day my sister is so amazing with her.

I love that my niece and nephew, who are half-Korean, have a Korean cousin. We are a family of Koreans!

It's beautiful and it's wonderful.
There's a sort of open-mindedness about us all because of it.

It's very natural and what we've been exposed to, but I think people look at us sometimes and they think Naleigh is my sister's child, or they think my sister and I are a couple and these are our children.

I just love that, because I like surprising people. I like reminding myself that it's unusual to others, because to me it's not.

How has the baby changed your life and your priorities?

A lot of people choose not to have children, but for me, I wanted there to be more in my life than just me. My world felt very narrow - it was all about my work, or all about me and my relationship with Josh, or all about Josh and his work.

I wanted to broaden it and for there to be something more important, and Naleigh is clearly and obviously that.

It does put your priorities into perspective. It's much easier for me now to put my foot down about my priorities because it's not just me I'm protecting, it's my daughter.

I always thought, "Oh yeah, I'm going to love being a mom, I'm going to love my child and I'm going to be a great mother. I'm going to do all the things I'm supposed to do as a mom, but I'm not going to be one of those over-indulgent parents who thinks their kid is the second coming".

But it's impossible! I keep trying to say to myself, "I think you feel this way because she's your child, Katie. Don't assume that everyone feels this way about her".

But she is really cool. She's super funny, she's got this crazy, wacky sense of humour and she's really cute. I mean if you saw her, I think you'd agree. She's really cute and funny and charming.

How has your marriage changed since Naleigh came into your life?
All we do is talk about her, whereas before, all we did was talk about ourselves. [Laughs]We just talk about her so much. I think we're fast approaching the day where it's like, "Can you at least see that I'm here too?"

Is your working life less important to you now that you have more demands at home?

I remember my mother and I once looking at each other going, "Wow, we're going to the Golden Globes" because we'd only ever watched it on TV.

Now, I'm kind of like, "Do I have to go?" It is a lot of work, a lot of effort, and I get very self-conscious.

I would so rather hang in my great comfy dress on my couch, with my kid and watch it at home.

Killers to become closing film of Shanghai International Film Festival

Lionsgate’s Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl starring romantic action comedy Killers will have its China premiere as the closing film of the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). 

Beijing and Los Angeles based DMG Entertainment, the company that introduces the film to China, announced the news today.

"The tone of this romantic action comedy has just the sort of identifiable traits in American
projects that can be appreciated and enjoyed by the Chinese people," says DMG Entertainment CEO Dan Mintz.

Organizers of SIFF confirmed the selection of  "Killers"  as its closing night film. The festival normally chooses a Chinese film as its opening film and a foreign film as closing film. Being selected as the closing film normally means a green light from the Chinese authority to import the film into China market.

China Film Group, the country’s only film importer is yet to decide if the company will officially import the film as one of the 20 films imported on a revenue-sharing basis, according to Weng Li, spokesperson of the group. However, it is understood that the film is being considered by the company’s selection committee.

Once receiving a greenlight to enter China as one of the revenue-sharing films, it will be the first of Lionsgate’s films to enter China and get to share the film’s box office takings in China. Normally, blockbusters from major studios get to be selected as revenue-sharing films.

Katherine talks about being a working mom

Katherine Heigl has revealed she found out she could adopt her daughter whilst filming her new movie Killers.

The 31-year-old says the movie is very "significant" to her for that reason.

Katherine and her husband Josh Kelly became parents last September when they adopted daughter Naleigh from South Korea.

The actress, who first found fame when she starred in the TV medical drama Grey's Anatomy, went on to say that mixing motherhood and a career can be tough.

She said: "I knew I was going to be a working mum. I knew I wasn't going to give up my career but you just cannot be prepared for that feeling when you're looking at them and holding your suitcase and they're reaching for you.

"So it is hard but I love what I do and I'm happy to be here and promoting this movie that I'm proud of and really excited about, so that kind of makes up for it... and I chat."

Talking about Sandra Bullock and Paparazzis

Everybody should be believe in something, and Katherine Heigl believes in the church of Sandra Bullock.

"Whenever I'm about to do or say something," the actress told me recently, "I first think W.W.S.B.D., which stands for What Would Sandra Bullock Do?

"I don't know her personally," she added, "but from what I've seen of her and what I've read about her, she seems to be one of the most well-spoken, gracious, charming and funny women in Hollywood. If I could get there, I would like to be just like her."

The 31-year-old Heigl, star of the current film "Killers" and an Emmy winner from her time on the TV series "Grey's Anatomy," said she has always admired the 45-year-old Bullock, but became a serious believer after the latter's ordeal following her Oscar win as best actress. In case you've been climbing a very high mountain, submerged on a nuclear sub under the polar ice cap or orbiting the Earth on the space station, Bullock had no sooner returned home with her trophy than her home broke up after she learned of her husband's infidelities. In the meantime, she revealed that she had adopted a baby boy, and planned to raise him as a single mom.

Not surprisingly, Bullock's woes became fodder for the tabloid media, and the so-called mainstream media was not far behind in covering this story.

Heigl said she was particularly impressed with how Bullock handled herself during this media firestorm, and what the Oscar-winning actress had to say about the paparazzi in a People magazine interview in its May 10 edition.

"I feel such guilt and sadness about how they (her three step-children with husband Jesse James) have been hunted by the photographers," Bullock said. "I just wanted to ask the photographers if they have children. Would this be fair to do to them? I wish there were laws here in the U.S. that were the same as in the U.K., where children are not allowed to be hunted down or mowed over to get a photo.

"I was profoundly amazed at how much money was being made from other people's pain."

Heigl is no stranger to being hounded by the paparazzi and tabloid reporters. She was embroiled in several controversies during her stint on "Grey's Anatomy," and she knows full well what it's like to be hounded.

"There becomes a focus on you that sometimes can feel overwhelming," Heigl explained. "For example, you're eating in a restaurant and they're shooting pictures of you through the window. You feel so self-conscious. You feel like you have to pose all the time.

"And it's not like they're (the paparazzi) respectful. They're not nice. It's not like they say: 'Could we have a couple of photos?' and then walk away. They try to instigate trouble or start an argument with you. They want drama, and they'll do or say anything to get it.

"I was going crazy; I wasn't being myself. Then I read what Sandra said. She's so grounded. She isn't aggressive in any way. She doesn't take it all so personally. She really gets it. I swear that reading what she said changed my life."

Katherine Heigl: 'I'm not another celebrity adopter"

The Killers star, who is now a mum to 10-month-old Naleigh, claims she was inspired by her own mother, who adopted her Korean sister Meg when she was a child.

"It's so funny. My mum and I joke about it when people say 'you're just doing it because it's trendy'."

"My mum says 'Well, i'm trendier than everybody because I was doing it in the 1970s when I adopted your sister."

Heigl claimed she was loving motherhood.

"I'm very grateful for this little being in my life. I'm very grateful she's my daughter. I'm so grateful we found each other."

"It's not so much about her being adopted. I just wanted to be a mum and she needed one so here we are."

Heigl, 31, is married to Josh Kelley, and claims she's still surprised at how attracted she is to him.

"I'm still so infatuated with him. We've been together four and a half years so you'd think by now it would start to feel a little bit calm but I still think he's so hot and so sexy and he's a great dad."

Katherine's Emmy submission

Though she sat out more than half of the season of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has submitted herself in the supporting actress category for this year’s Emmy race, her representative confirms. There is no set amount of episodes that an actor must appear in to be eligible for either the supporting or lead actor categories.

Heigl only appeared in a handful of episodes this year before her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was last seen around Seattle Grace in January. Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama March 1 but she never showed up. Heigl told EW that “rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.” ABC Studios said it was mutually agreed upon that Heigl would end her run this season.

Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmys will be announced July 8. As for the rest of the Grey’s stars, Ellen Pompeo submitted herself as lead actress, while the other ensemble members — including Patrick Dempsey — will duke it out in the supporting categories. To vie for the best drama prize, Grey’s submitted the two-hour finale, as well as the episodes “The Time Warp,” “Suicide is Painless,” “I Saw What I Saw,” and “Give Peace a Chance” for consideration.

City activist Jim Carlucci seems to have become the unofficial point-man for the production team working on the film adaptation of local author Janet Evanovich’s “One For the Money.”

Slated to star Grey’s Anatomy’s Katherine Heigl as the series’ heroine Stephanie Plum, the movie will likely not be shot in Trenton. Pittsburgh neighborhoods will stand in for Trenton instead.

But members of the production team visited with Carlucci in Trenton last week and Thursday they asked him to help in getting the look of an NJ Transit bus down just right.

“I applaud them for trying to get all the details right,” Carlucci said.

Carlucci said he directed them to the transit agency’s Web site, then took matters into his own hands by snapping off a few bus pictures to send to the folks from Hollywood.

While acknowledging his disappointment in not having the production crews, and their influx of money, in the city, Carlucci said he hoped that keeping the lines of communication open might bring opportunities in the future if other books in the series are optioned for the big screen.

Talking about Naleigh

Grey's Anatomy fans were shocked when Katherine Heigl first announced her departure from the show she'd starred on for six years. Many viewers thought the actress -- who stars opposite Ashton Kutcher in the new action-comedy Killers (out in theaters June 4) -- left the small screen to focus on her growing film career. But 31-year-old Heigl tells iVillage exclusively her main motive was to focus on her relationship with her 18-month-old adoptive daughter, Naleigh.

"I really wanted to see it through," Heigl says of the hit show. "But I'll forever be grateful, no matter how hard that decision was, that I made it because I've had this unbelievable time with my daughter."

The new mom, who married singer Josh Kelley in 2007, says she and her husband knew they were ready to be parents before adopting Naleigh. "We just thought, 'It's time to make our lives bigger than just the two of us,'" she says. "We needed to expand our hearts and our love and make life more important."

Killers makes four romantic comedies in a row for Katherine Heigl. She knows what she’s doing. It’s a comfortable genre, but she’s having fun and maybe growing just a little.

“It’s not like breaking crazy new ground but I think it just has this sort of great added benefit of the action, which I haven’t done in the previous films,” Heigl said. “For me, I look at all of them in a row. There is an interesting progression from like the true hardcore romantic comedy, fairytale aspect of 27 Dresses to the edgier more male perspective of Ugly Truth and crassness of that and trying to kind of meld maybe a little Knocked Up and a little of 27 Dresses.”

In Killers, Heigl plays a woman who discovers that her husband used to be a CIA killer. “To me, I’m much broader I think comedically in this and there is the action aspect. I’ve got more of a straight guy in Ashton and then I’m the kind of ridiculous one. And we’re in this crazy sort of James Bond scenario. So each one is slightly different but it’s not so crazy outside of this.”

Action isn’t totally new to Heigl. Before Grey’s Anatomy, she defeated a classic movie monster. “I killed Chucky, in Bride of Chucky. You don’t remember that? The fact that I get to be in the movies I want to be in now, and I don’t have to kill Chucky over and over again, is really awesome. Not to say that that was bad movie. It had its good moments. But then he came back and the next one where Chucky gets lucky and you’re like I killed that guy. What’s going on?”

Honda Provides Dog Friendly Elements to The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., presented two Dog Friendly Honda Elements to the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation last month. Designed with pet safety and comfort as top priorities, both Elements will be used to transport rescued dogs throughout the Western U.S.

'Marriage is an ebb and flow'

Katherine Heigl admits marriage isn't always easy.

"I love being married," she says, "but there was a time when I didn't so much. The first four to six months were the hardest. It was the first time we lived together, and there was a weight in the relationship that didn't exist before."

She met musician Josh Kelley five years ago when she appeared in a video for his song Only You. They tied the knot in 2007.

"It was crazy. I was like, 'Can't we live in separate houses so I can keep things the way I like them?' I didn't want to nag all the time. You fall into those quintessential roles where he's the put-upon husband, and I'm the naggy wife."

She adds, "I don't think he felt that way at all, but I got insecure about it. Communication is always difficult. I don't care if you're married or it's your best friend or your mom or your dad. Sometimes you miscommunicate. I'm someone who always hears it wrong, so I've had to work on that. Now we're in a really wonderful place. Marriage is an ebb and flow, and there will always be rough spots you have to work on."

Katherine Heigl is 'staying real' amid welcome change

t's a good thing Katherine Heigl likes change. The past three years have been filled with new adventures for the actress, who married musician Josh Kelley, left her starring role on Grey's Anatomy and became a mother.

"I do like change. That's the one thing exciting about me," says Heigl, 31. "I like going on location for films. I like new characters. I change my look a lot. But roller coasters are as adventurous as I get."

It's a different story for Heigl's character Jen in Killers, in theaters Friday. The romantic comedy/action thriller stars Ashton Kutcher as a trained killer who falls for a normal gal played by Heigl.

"Jen is kind of dorky," says Heigl, who is currently a brunette but is a blonde in the film. "But she doesn't know she's dorky. She has a moment when she tries to be sophisticated, and then she gives up."

When it came to starting a family, Heigl did just the opposite. She stayed the course through the "nail-biting" process of adopting a baby.

Heigl says her perspective has changed "in a good way" since September, when she and her husband adopted Naleigh (pronounced Nee-lee), a 10-month-old girl from South Korea.

"I can't imagine my life without Naleigh or not being her mother," Heigl says.

The past six months have been life-altering, Heigl says, but "I still laugh at the same things and get angry at the same things. I'm a sappy mom now. I didn't think I would be. I thought I'd be a cool mom who keeps everything in perspective."

Heigl might be sentimental, but censored, she isn't.

"I've tried to keep my mouth closed for a minute," Heigl says with a wry smile," and I can't. At one point I got so paranoid and afraid, and I was qualifying everything I said and apologizing for everything. I realized it was ridiculous."

(Heigl famously spoke out against Grey's castmate Isaiah Washington for using a slur against co-star T. R. Knight. She also withdrew her name from consideration for a 2008 Emmy, saying, "I did not feel I was given the material this season to warrant a nomination.")

Now, Heigl says she's trying to "stay grounded and real. Sometimes I say things that are stupid, but I'm trying to be honest and relate to other people," she says. "Occasionally things get taken out of context. But that's life. I like to encourage other people to not feel that they have to say whatever the publicist tells them to say."

Heigl says she misses her Grey's friends and her character, Izzie Stevens, but she feels she made the right choice to move on.

"I felt very protective of Izzie. I really loved her. I felt she was an admirable woman who certainly made mistakes. But I was starting to not like her, and that bothered me," she says.

Leaving Grey's enabled her to grow closer to Naleigh. "I can't cultivate a relationship with my child if it's between takes. I tried that on a movie and realized, 'This is not going to work.' It will work some of the year, but not 12 months a year," she says.

Meanwhile, Heigl isn't ruling out more kids — biological or adopted.

"Maybe we'll have four or five kids. We'll see how two go. Two could throw me right over the edge. We've talked about biological children, and we haven't ruled it out. But I would like to adopt again. It's a little bit hard for me. If I have a biological child, is there a child now who will go without a mom? But I can't take them all."

In July, Heigl starts filming One for the Money, an adaptation of the first of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. Until then, she'll enjoy hanging out at home.

"Josh and I have a fantastic group of friends who we took a long time to cultivate and who hang out at my pool almost every weekend. We laugh. The boys play football, and we grill. We lead a suburban normal life in Los Angeles."

Katherine is through apologizing

Katherine Heigl looked like she was about to cry. Her eyes were watering, and her beautiful face contorted as if in pain.

For a moment, one might have thought that she was re-living that mea culpa cover story in a national magazine in April, in which she apologized to the public for any missteps or misstatements she might have made in leaving her Emmy-winning role in the hit TV show "Grey's Anatomy" to pursue a burgeoning movie career.

But it turned out not to be a bout of contrition that caused her discomfort, but allergies. In fact, she apologized for making faces, and assured me that she is done making apologies. Yes, even she appreciated the irony of that last remark.

The 31-year-old actress, who is sporting dark hair these days instead of her familiar blond locks, spoke freely about her need to apologize publicly, and, sitting in a Beverly Hills hotel room, she also explained the dark hair, how adopting a child in September changed her life, and why she chose to star opposite Ashton Kutcher in the action/comedy "Killers," which opens Friday.

She plays a young woman on vacation in France who meets the ultimate bad boy – a government assassin. Hilarity, death and marital bliss ensue.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Is the apology tour over?

KATHERINE HEIGL (laughs): Yes, it is.

Q. How did that work out?

A. I don't know. For me, it was a weird time. I was told that I really offended people, and that people thought I was being ungrateful and that I was losing my fan base. The most upsetting part of that was that people thought I was ungrateful. I really needed to correct that, but then the apology became the whole story.

Q. I didn't want to be another media person dwelling on the apology, but I thought that Entertainment Weekly cover was so strange.

A. I needed to clarify my position, which was that I'm just a kid with an opinion; don't take me too seriously. I used to whine, in a joking way, that I was tired at work, but suddenly that turned into ungrateful.

Q. Do you believe your motivations were misunderstood?

A. Certainly, my motivations were misunderstood. I didn't mean that I shouldn't have to work these hours on the job. It wasn't just me working 17 hours a day; there was a whole crew of people working the same hours, and it upset me that people thought I was complaining for myself. The crew was working longer and harder than me, and I thought it was unfair. But it came out like I was this whiny actress.

Q. Do you think you're past it now?

A. I think so, although everybody brings it up in interviews.

Q. Sorry about that.

A. No, it's OK. It is what it is. I'm not ashamed or embarrassed. I was for a minute, but I've done my part. But I don't want to come off like a diva. I know it's still fresh so people want to talk about it.

Q. Did you learn anything from the experience?

A. One of the most important things you can do as a human being is to grow and change, and admit when you're wrong. I was wrong, and I admitted it. Believe me, I'm going to make a million more mistakes in my life.

Q. In "Grey's Anatomy," you did some pretty serious acting, but in your movie career, you have shown more of an inclination toward comedy, particularly in "Knocked Up," "27 Dresses," "The Ugly Truth" and now "Killers." When did you get in touch with your inner Lucy Ricardo?

A. (laughs) It was "Knocked Up" that gave me my first opportunity, although I was mostly the straight person reacting to those incredibly funny people around me. That got me more comfortable with physical comedy.

Q. But there must have been something before that. Were you funny in high school?

A. Oh no. I took myself way too seriously in high school.

Q. So, how did you find comedy?

A. When I first moved to Los Angeles , I was about 19. I hit puberty late, and I was about 20 pounds heavier than I am now. I had a baby face but a voluptuous body, and 20 pounds overweight doesn't go over well in Hollywood. I was being told constantly to lose weight. And then my skin broke out. I was really self-conscious. So I stopped relying on being pretty, and started relying on being funny.

Q. So, you weren't a naturally funny kid?

A. My mother always thought I was funny. Does that count?

Q. No. My mother thinks I'm tall and blond.

A. (laughs). But I did have a weird sense of humor.

Q. Do you enjoy doing comedy?

A. I love it. There's nothing better than bouncing funny lines off each other.

Q. Can we address the elephant in the room?

A. OK.

Q. Why the dark hair?

A. It's for a film role I'm starting in July. It's called "One for the Money."

Q. That's based on the Stephanie Plum novels. How does "Killers" fit into the career plan?

A. I didn't want to move too far away from the romantic comedies because I really enjoy them and they're working for me, but it has this whole action twist. I get to be goofy to Ashton's straight man. In my other roles, I played the neurotic, uptight girl, but I got to play something entirely different.

Q. Obviously, you're not running from the romantic comedy genre?

A. I'm not saying I'll never doing another drama again. In fact, I have a dramatic project planned in the fall, but it's certainly not "Monster." It's not that heavy. But I love romantic comedies. That's what I go to see at the movies. Sometimes, I just want to laugh and be entertained. The heavy dramas stick with me too long.

Q. Excuse me, but would you like a tissue?

A. No, I'm all right. It's my allergies. I'm dying, but I'm OK. I just want to make sure I don't have some gigantic mascara drip running down my face.

Q. No, you're good.

A. Thank you.

Q. It seems as if you enjoy making movies a lot more than making television shows. Is that true?

A. The only reason I prefer it to TV is that it's more of a part-time job. Television is a nine months a year job; movies are a three-month job. I can control my year a little better.

Q. Why is that important?

A. I can spend more time off with my family. My husband (singer-songwriter Josh Kelley) is releasing a country album soon, and I'd like to take the baby with him on tour.

Q. You're going to do the whole tour bus thing?

A. I already told him I'm not sleeping on the bus. Me, the baby and eight guys on a bus? I don't think so. They smell. I'll stay in a hotel.

Q. Has motherhood made you a better actress?

A. I don't know that yet.

Q. Why did you wait so long to become a mom?

A. In our 20s, it was all about our careers, and it was all about us. Finally, we decided to expand the horizons a little bit. I really wanted to be a mom, and I really wanted something in my life that was more important than me.

Q. And did it turn out as you had hoped?

A. There is one part of me that feels like Naleigh has been in my life forever, and that I have been her mother forever. There is another part of my life that is completely different than it used to be. But I still go out to dinner with my husband, and I still have a few hours while she's sleeping to do what I want. I still live my life.

Q. But wouldn't you have liked to enjoy this movie-star phase as a single woman with no responsibilities?

A. No, I've been working my whole life. I really wanted a family. I was done with work being my number one priority.

Q. Your first thought in the morning is her?

A. Absolutely.

Q. But when you do have some free time, do you think about your career?

A. Yes. It's still important to me, and that's a dilemma for me. I've always said I'll be a working mom, and now I realize it's going to be a compromise. I'm already itching to get back to work, and yet my heart is aching right now because she's upstairs and I'm not with her. It's distracting not to be with her.

Q. What was your sudden "Grey's Anatomy" fame like?

A. It was the most exciting time of my life for about two years. I couldn't believe photographers were following me around. I couldn't believe anyone cared what I ate in a restaurant. It was thrilling because I spent so many years worrying about my next job. I wouldn't have traded that time for anything.

Q. But it must have grown old at some point?

A. It did, but you hate to complain because people think you're being ungrateful. But it wasn't healthy to have so much focus on me. I started to not be me. Then again, nobody held a gun to my head and made me be an actress. I chose this life, and I'm glad I did

In “Killers,” out this Friday in theaters, Katherine Heigl discovers her mild-mannered new husband is secretly a gun-toting C.I.A. spy and learns to kick butt herself. But did all of that on-screen action translate to real life skills for the star?

“Oh yeah, a little bit,” Katherine told Access Hollywood at the film’s LA premiere on Tuesday. “You know, I can fake it real nice.”

The film was shot a year ago, and Katherine added that she was “really excited” for people to finally see it.

“I am so ready for it to open and to see people’s reactions,” she said.

Looking glam with dark hair and a pink top, Katherine said the premiere was a good excuse for the new mom to take some time for herself – so good, she says, she might do so more often.

“My prep is the long shower, the deep conditioner in the hair, the nice little mask after,” she said. “I’m like, ‘I should do this more often just for [husband] Josh [Kelley] and I to go have dinner. It would be nice.”
